Kamuikotan
History
Situated by the stretch of Ishikari River between the Kamikawa Basin and the Ishikari Plain, and named from the Ainu words kamui (God) and kotan (village or settlement), this gorge has been an Ainu holy ground since ancient times. Kamuikotan is formed from chlorite schist worn down by the Ishikari River over a staggering hundred million years, and some of its rocks and crevices are the setting for Ainu legends.
