Asahikawa Museum of Sculpture in Honor of Teijiro Nakahara
History
This art gallery was opened in 1994 to honor the work of Teijiro Nakahara (1888-1921), a great Japanese modern sculptor with ties to Asahikawa. As well as twelve sculptures of Nakahara’s, the gallery displays works by sculptors such as Rodin, who was a major source of inspiration for Nakahara, and Tsuruzo Ishii, who was Nakahara’s best friend. The gallery also displays pieces by recipients of the Teijiro Nakahara Prize, a sculpture prize established in 1970 to honor Nakahara’s work and contribute to the development of sculpture in Japan.
