Etiquette

In Japan, there are three main types of bows.\n\n1) Eshaku\nUse this when passing by your boss or a customer.Do not simply nod your head; bend your body precisely at the waist. The eshaku should be at a 15 degree angle.\n2) Keirei\nThis is the most often used bow.It is used to welcome customers or when you visit somewhere.Be sure not to keep your face up when you do it.The keirei should be at a 30 degree angle.\n3) Saikeirei\nThis polite bow is used when expressing respect or an apology.Your hands should be placed at your sides. The Saikeirei should be at a 45 degree angle.

上級テクニック

When Japanese people experience an extreme crisis, their ultimate weapon is the "Dogeza" form of bowing. After making a major mistake in business, or when asking your wife for forgiveness, face the other person in a kneeling position, place the palms of your hands on the ground, lower your head until it is close to the ground, hold this position for a while, and ask for forgiveness. However, if you overuse this, it will become less effective, so be sure to consider the timing.\n* It should be used only once or twice per person in your lifetime.
