Asahikawa City Museum
Museum
There are two floors of permanent exhibitions. The upper floor has a variety of recreated houses, from those of the Ainu people and older indigenous peoples of Hokkaido, to the living quarters of the Tonden Army, who came to develop Hokkaido in the 19th century (pit house, Ainu chise, Tonden Army barracks). Each house faithfully recreates how its inhabitants lived, with a large number of precious artefacts from their day-to-day lives. The main theme of the lower floor is the relationship between mankind and the nature of the north. There are a wide range of exhibits relating to nature and civilisation, teaching you everything you could want to know about the geology, topology, climate and ecosystems of Asahikawa and the surrounding area, and the processes that each has undergone.
